Raid the Kitchen for Your Beauty Needs
Everyone likes to look good, but nobody wants to pay the shockingly high price of fancy treatments and expensive lotions. The next time you run out of face mask, hair treatment or eye cream, take a good look at your pantry or fridge for natural ingredients such as avocado, lemon, eggs or cucumber to make your own beauty products.
Here are some tried and tested remedies.

Face masks
To add radiance to dull skin:
- Mix egg yolk with 1 teaspoon olive oil.
- Add 1 teaspoon lemon juice.
- Apply the mixture by massaging your face in circular motions for about 10 minutes.
- Rinse with warm water.
- Apply moisturising cream.
To add moisture to dry skin:
- Mix egg yolk with olive oil and warm honey.
- Add sour cream, plain olive oil and mashed avocado.
- Apply the mixture over your face and leave on for 20 minutes.
- Rinse well.
- Apply moisturising cream.
Hair treatments
To add moisture and sheen to dry hair:
- Mash a ripe avocado.
- Apply it to hair.
- Let it sit for about 20 minutes.
- Shampoo and condition as usual.
To hydrate and rejuvenate brittle hair with split ends:
- Mix 1 tablespoon of honey with 1/4 cup of olive oil.
- Beat 2 egg yolks into the honey and oil.
- Saturate hair with the mixture from root to tips, paying special attention to the ends.
- Put your hair up into a shower cap for 45 minutes.
- Rinse with cold water.
- Shampoo with a moisturising shampoo and condition as usual.
Eye treatments
To remove dark circles:
- Place a cold tea bag on top of each eye.
- Leave for 10 to 15 minutes. (Lie down and relax, or they’ll fall off!)
- Repeat daily.
To relieve stress:
- Apply thinly sliced cucumber on top of each eye.
- Leave for 15 to 20 minutes (lie down and relax while you wait).
- Repeat twice a day, morning and evening.
